The trouble with free news servers is that some will only allow downloading 
(reading) and not allow posting to the newsgroups.  From my experience, news 
servers that allow reading and posting usually change their policy regarding 
this matter after a little while.  It's pretty much a case of just going 
through the list to see what ones allow what.........
You could also check out http://www.dejanews.com (a mighty fine site, IMHO) 
which allows reading and posting but, AFAIK, it can only be done while on 
line using a web browser.  They have just recently setup their site so that 
participants can set up and save their own particular choices in newsgroups 
listings (via cookie file, I believe) so it's pretty much like using a 
dedicated newsgroups reader only subject to the limitations of the net 
(server load, speed etc).  One really nice feature I like about DejaNews 
though is the ability to search and retrieve any newsgroups message spanning 
the last 4 - 5 years........:-)
