   I was able to reproduce this and see the same thing on the Barkto news
group.    The news server actually switches into 'cripple mode' - sending
one character at a time and waiting for the Ack before sending the next character.

  But it's not repeatable.  I tried Telnet and everything worked at normal
speed.  I went back to Thunderbird and it worked at normal speed.
