Taken strictly, that happened even before that... remember the "modem incompatibilities" all of us used to have with some systems on a daily basis? There were systems I simply couldn't connect to, and the situation worstened as the range of transmission speeds and protocols increased. Admittedly, the ISDN-only systems represented a whole new situation, since even buying a new modem or changing the modem configuration wouldn't allow an analog modem system to connect to an ISDN system. But we've had similar problems almost from the day I entered fido in the Spring of 1993. The nice part about it is that fido still hasn't broken down because of such matters, even though we now have BinkP systems that neither ISDN nor analog systems can connect to without an Internet connection. But true interconnectivity, assuming it ever really existed, is something that disappeared early in the fido game.
