=> how fast can a boat go w/o flipping:?
Sorry for the slow reply. Just reading the other replies and couldn't
resist :)
Several years ago our local cottage comunity used to run a 12' and under
race at its annual regatta. One individual I know put his 10' duck
hunting punt (square nose, flat bottom boats) in it.. The normal motor
on that punt was a 7.5, he borrowed an old 35 hp outboard for the race.
It went over backwards when he turned up wind. I hazard a guess at the
wind speed of about 15 mph and his speed of maybe 25+mph. Kinda like
trying to hold down a 4x8 sheet of ply wood in a 40 mph wind storm :)
For a few years after that the race was changed to a 10 HP and under but
even that eventually was dropped due to untimely collisions :)
It was fun while it lasted though!!
To make a point though, if all your looking for is a thrill, speed is not
required. More so what is required is speed compared to the vessle. Yes
80 MPH in an off-shore is thrilling (fastest I have ridden), however I
can assure you that 30 mph in an 8' home built sea-flea is also an
absolute blast!! Anything on the edge is a blast and chances of dying
from the trill drop dramatically as speed reduces..
I use the comparison of motor cycles.. My old Kawi 750 triple used to
really crank my addrenelin big time. The first time I ever drove a moped
(long after I owned the triple) I found myself doing about 50 mph down a
long hill. Trust me, the adrenilin rush was easily just as high. I just
didn't look as cool :)
