Betreff: msgapi licensing inquiry
Hi!
You probably remember me from the time when we were discussing Y2K issues
in the Squish API. I am working in the Husky project
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/husky), which is providing a fidonet suite
for Linux and other Unices.
All our work is based on smapi, which is a far offspring of your MSGAPI.
Smapi still contains your original license text (attached below), and while
I personally do consider this an extremely freee license, we in fact have
big problems placing husky as an integral part of Linux distributions,
because Linux distributors (especially the Debian folks) classify this
license as non-free.
So, we'd like to change this license into something that is accepted by the
Linux community. As you recently open-sourced Maximus and Squish, we are
hoping to get your agreement to such a license change. The licenses that we
would like to use are either LGPL (the GNU license for libraries) or the
BSD license (which basically states that the code is copyrighted by you,
but anything can be done with it as long as the reference to your name is
pertained). I personally prefere the BSD license, but LGPL is OK as well.
For your information, I am attaching to this mail the current smapi
license, and the BSD license. I assume that LGPL is already known to you,
and as it is quite lengthy, I do not attach it. The Husky project members
would be extremely glad if you'd gave your consent to changing the license
of smapi to LGPL or BSD.
With best regards,
Tobias Ernst.
