Geo,

I connected the Linux box directly to the DSL modem and rebooted.

The traceroute to your site still does not work. Traceroute to some other
sites works. Though I do not see the intermediate hop times.

Also, Thunderbird still gets messages very slowly when it fetches a second
message - and this problem is only with your news server.

I noticed when it is fetching the second message the activity light on the
modem is busy blinking the whole time. That is consistent with Mike N.'s
observation that the messages are getting transferred back 1 byte at a
time.

So what causes the news server to start sending one byte at a time?
