| subject: | Win95 & Comm Port Madness |
* Crossposted from: Local User Msgs to All Hi, Over the last couple of weeks I have been having real difficulty with terminal programs, win95, and my modem. The problem is that the computer 'hangs' (crashes), while I am using the com2 port ,ie. while online and while I try to multi-task at the sametime. I have gone thru several terminal packages in a hope of finding one that would work.. Well I got a few replies from people saying that they use almost all of the terminal packages that I have tried and failed with, quite successfully.. Therefore, last night I decided, that there must be something wrong with my setup.. So, I de-installed (removed) my modem from my win95, along with its com2 port.. From here I tried to FIRST install the modem, thinking it'll either tell me I have to install the com2 port first or install it itself. So off I went to install the modem before the com port. I worked and got to the screen where you select com ports. On the list there was a com2 port (remember I deleted it beforehand), I thought ok so the modem installed it thats good. SO i picked it from the list.. Then I went into "control panel -->system" to see if there was a com2 port installed. There wasnt, so curiously I loaded up a terminal and tried 'ata' and the modem answered the line and I got a dial tone. So, I thought this was odd and that I didnt fully remove the com port before or something. SO once again I removed the modem.. This time I started by installing the com2 port first via the add new hardware wizard.. This worked and I checked to see if the com2 port was now on the system list and it was.. So I went to install the modem after this and when the select com port screen came up, there were now 'two com2 ports' hmm this is weird. I picked one and finished the install. I went into control panel --> system and found that there was still only one com2 port listed. SO, it seems I have a rogue com port running around and I also believe that this has been causing my problems with the terminal software locking up.. What I would appreciate is if someone out there could tell me how to remove it , (the rogue com port).? Thanks for your time. --- EzyBlueWave V1.20 03fa0082* Origin: Alien BBS * Sydney Aust * +61-2-9743-5871 * FREE!
