subject: What`s `HST` mean?

PW>> You mean V.34+ actually existed in 1994?!?

RB>> Yes Motorola or was it AT&T had it in modems back then.

RB>> USR was beta testing it and released it to the public in May 95.

PW> So USR just "exploited" the higher speeds thru marketing
it as V.34+,

 PW> altho

PW> someone went off and did all the hard work?

Well, USR was in the TEAM that invented and developed the idea.

All these big companies got together to develop the standard.(ITU)

V34+ was USR's name for their own marketing...they had to call it

something. No one else seemed to have a name for it.

RB>> RB>> The USR Courier is designed for the Business market not home

PW>> So it's not exactly the "best value" modem for SOHO?

RB>> It is when you get better, more reliable connects all the time.

PW> Well, that's what counts. Does it support CID?

Yes, mine support CID. The Australian ones however do not as yet, as

the code has not been upgraded, due partly to the fact that Austel have

not decided if we (the public) are going to get it yet, and another

commitee will then spend a year deciding what to call the service....

I think they want to call it CND (caller number Display)what they are

going to call it. Naturally the name & the service will HAVE to be

TOTALLY incompatable with the American system.

RB>> RB>> USR brought it to the people with Flash Rom making
it affordable

PW>> Which lead to big bucks for USR, right?

RB>> Don't know, I'm not a bean counter for USR.

PW> I thought you went in for that sort of dreary job?

I'm only Boring on the outside

RB>> (33600) modems are RB>> now old technology. The 56K
modems are being

 RB>> pushed by marketing now.

 PW>> Are those buddy-to-buddy yet?

RB>> No, you must be digital one end.

PW> I don't quite get it. Aren't analogue and digital mutually

 PW> "incompatible"???

PW> Please explain exactly what is required for a 56Kbps connect!

The modem like device that you are connecting too (with your 56k x2

USR Courier { that was upgraded by Flash Rom }) has to be digital

modem (one that is analog one side but connected physically to a

digital network (ISDN)

The technology only works on ISDN BRI/PRI or channelized T-1 lines.

A standard Sportster or Courier will only dialout at 56K. They will

not answer at 56K but v34+.

You have buy a minumum of 8 units in a rack to support 56K technology

for dialin. This technology is for ISPs, not BBSes.

PW>> What is the best chipset?

RB>> A Texas instuments Programable DSP as used in the USR Sportster and

RB>> Courier. Enabling them to be upgraded (yet again) to the 56k

PW> But would the datapump be able to handle 56Kbps?

MUST Be

RB>> technology ( to be released in Jan 97 as an SDL for flashing into the

 PW> SDL???

Software Down Loader presumably.

USR's own name for their little programs that they load into the

FlashRom.
