There was an amateur atempt to do a multimirror telescope about 10 years
ago but from what i heard when I saw it was that the scope really didn't
work well.
Even the MMT telescope is has gotten a larger single mirror instead of the
multiple mirrors that it had.  I think that they finally realized that a
full aperture with more light gathering is more important than a pure
sparsed out aperture is.
