DR> Yesterday in the mail came this year's classroom assignments. As most
DR> of you know, I'd LIKE to homeschool but we're not currently in the
DR> financial position to allow me to quit my morning job. So we're aiming
DR> for pulling them out sometime between conference time (mid-Nov) and
DR> Christmas vacation.
DR> I was not overly pleased with the classroom assignments. I had made
DR> requests for particular teachers and only one out of two was honored.
DR> My 4th grader will get the same teacher that my last year 4th grader
DR> had. It's a male teacher and I know how he operates, agree with his
DR> homework policy (only what they don't finish in class, and special
DR> projects), and generally think Kristin would do well for him. This was
DR> the one request that they honored.
DR> For the 5th grader, tho, I did not get the teacher I requested. I Know
DR> that particular teacher, had observed her in action and felt that my
DR> daughter would do well under her. They did give me my 2nd choice tho
DR> (that I had not voiced to them, so it was accidental). It's a teacher
DR> moving up from 4th grade to 5th grade this year, a firm
DR> disciplinarian, and the GATE (gifted/talented) teacher. Jennifer is
DR> not labeled GATE, but as her 3rd grade teacher told me, she should
DR> have been. (Jennifer came within 2 points of making GATE, but Poway
DR> district puts everything on test scores, and nothing on teacher
DR> recommendation.) Being with the GATE kids will give her the
DR> opportunity for challenge, anyway, so I've decided that I'm not going
DR> to raise cain (especially since I hope to be yanking them out mid-year
DR> anyway).
One question: If you got the teachers you wanted (well, sorta...),
then why homeschool? Why yank them out -at all- after they've made friends
and adjusted to a school-day schedule? Couldn't you enhance what they've
learned at school, at home and start thaem with home-schooling during
the next year? Give it a definite cut-off point, instead of in the middle?
It'll help things flow easier. Well, that's how I feel about it
anway... ;) BTW, I've always found taht the more children I have, the
less of a chance I have of getting a school system to cooperate with me.
... Teacher, can I go home? My brain is full.
