Hi Vicki,
VO> Thanks for the info. My brother gave me a gift certificate for my
VO> birthday to Joann Fabrics and I'm seriously thinking about getting an
VO> adapter and some thread with it.
It sure saves a lot of frustration. I use a lot of certain colors
(white, navy) and having a cone of thread means not having to worry for
a long time about running out in the middle of a project.
RH> Basically, I would say that about any brand would be acceptable for
RH> most sewing jobs; it is a bit finer than cregular cotton covered
VO> That's good to know as well. I do a bit of sewing of pants for my
VO> husband, so I think probably I should stick to the regular thread for
The Mettler brand is a bit heavier than SureLock or Maxi-Lock; I would
say it's probably your best choice for something like pants. Overall, I
think your best bet is to try it and see if you like it. I started out
with the adapter and one cone; it was enough to convince me to go for it
for more cones.
VO> I'm sorry, I can't remember if you quilt or not, but would you
VO> recommend the cone thread for putting together quilts?
I do some quilting but use the cotton covered polyester as a general
rule. Most of what I've done has been with mixed fabrics so I use a
mixed thread. If I were using all cotton, I'd use an all cotton thread.
If I were to use cone thread for quilt piecing, again, I'd have to go
with the Mettler. It is a bit pricier but seems to be a better grade
than the others.
RH> my serger but the salesman reminded me of the buy 2, get one free deal
RH> so (even without the coupon, I'm a regular enough face in the store) I
RH> on 2 of the 3 cones; the 3rd is closer to being finished.
VO> That's pretty good. I know the feeling about the salesman knowing
 VO> you. :)
Actually, it's a shop that sells & repairs sewing machines and vaccuums.
I think most of their business comes from repairs/tune ups; that's where
I take my machines. It is good to have a working relationship with
somebody like that; if you need special help, you're more apt to get it
if the person knows you.
VO> Now if I could just get more thread on the bobbins. :) Was
VO> sewing a costume for a play and ran out, and it frustrates me to no
 VO> end when that happens.
Do you have an indicator light on your machine? Mine has one that works
most of the time; it's a big help. I know about how much more I can sew
before having to replace/rewind the bobbin. When you're doing a big
project, wind an extra bobbin or 2 so you can just pop one in instead of
having to take the time to wind a new one. It saves a couple of minutes
and a lot of frustration, especially when time is at a premium.
Catch you later,
Ruth
