subject: Opera Linux install problems

From: Randall Parker

I'm trying to install Opera and I'm getting installation errors:

User "randall" does not have write access to /etc
  System wide configuration files:
   /etc/opera6rc
   /etc/operatc.fixed
  were not installed
Directory "/usr/share/icons/hicolor" not writable by user
"randall", icons not installed.
Directory "/usr/share/applications" not writable by user
"randall", desktop entry not installed.

Can I change my current user from a bash prompt?

Should I not even be in my own home dir or subdir of it when installing Opera?

Or should I be targetting its install for a more systemwide location?
