JP>> I'd be surprised if a modem could push 56k down an average PSTN phone
JP>> line without truckloads of errors and drop-outs.
DD>> I think Russell is suggesting that quite a few lines have NO trouble
DD>> with 33,600. Earlier this year Russell spent some weeks in Mossman
DD>> FNQ (over 1600Km from here). He polled twice a day, every day for his
DD>> point mail. He got about 95% 33,600 connects, the rest being 31,200.
JP> If you're reading, Russell, I'd be interested to see what sort of a
JP> connect you
JP> can achieve to my system down here in Sydney.
Were I am aat the moment I haave lousy lines and only get 33600/31200
to David because He is on the front door step of his exchange.
I will probably be back up in FNQ in Jan/Feb/March were I will be
sittiing on the door of the exchange as well.
I will do some tests with you from there for sure.
And I will try from here to you this week some time...but it wouldn't
be to Flash.. I tell ya.
As I have said before if you want rock solid 33600/33600 both ends
have to be at the doorstep of their exchanges (you have to be able to
see it from your house.)
JP> As for the USR 57.6k, from what I heard today, one side of the link needs
JP> to be
JP> running a Macrolink, which blows all chances of a 57600/57600 PSTN link
JP> out of
JP> the water.
Yes but, it can be a 57600/33600 PSTN link (if you are close to your
exchange)
JP> I can manage a 31200/31200 connect to M34Fs, but seemingly not 33600. I
I am betting it is the difference in Trellis codeing or Constellation,
being the reason USR's cant get 33600 to Rockwells. 31200 would not be
pushing the limits of the Rockwell as hard and therefore is possible.
JP> can't
JP> remember the reason for this. Can anybody refresh my memory? I recall
JP> that it
JP> had something to do with the symbol rate; 3429 being necessary for 33.6k.
JP>
JP> Comments, anyone?
Thats Bill's theory... mine is above
