NEW LOOK FOR RADIO AUSTRALIA IN 1997
______________________________________________________________
Radio Australia will launch a revamped English language service
next week with improved coverage of Australia, Asia and the
Pacific.
A highlight of the 1997 weekday schedule will be Dateline, a new
live current affairs program updated every three hours throughout
the day and with a shorter early edition in the preceding hour.
The new schedule includes RA's major world news but also with
specialist bulletins focussing on Australia and the Asian and
Pacific regions.
For the first time Radio Australia will also carry the best of the
ABC's daily domestic current affairs programs AM, The World Today
and PM.
Assistant General Manager Radio Australia, Terry Brown, said the
change to the weekday schedule was designed to make Radio
Australia, more accessible, contemporary and user friendly.
"The offering of a choice of bulletins both in content and duration
and 'Dateline' with its ability to extend beyond world coverage to
look closely at Asia and the Pacific, should enhance our English
language service. And more attention will be paid to business and
finance news in the region."
RA's long commitment to the Pacific will be reinforced in the new
format which includes the return of a revamped Pacific Beat program
and a new series called Pacific Focus.
The new Monday to Friday schedule will commence on Monday 20
January.
