I'm sure Radio Shack will be glad to sell you a scanner with
    10 to 20 channels for about $100. Problem is, I found a PRO-51
with 200 channels at a pawn shop for $150. For about 10 years
(ending recently) scanners cost about a dollar a channel at the
top end. That meant a 400 channel scanner cost about $400.
Now you can get 1000 channel scanners at the same price.
Of course, if you had a 400-channel scanner you could do one of
Bill's modifications and get 100,000 channels.
I find that the local city PD, fire, and county sheriff fit
nicely into 10 channels. That takes up one bank of either my
PRO-51 or PRO-2003. Surrounding cities are programmed into the
    other banks.
