There are three (that I know of) kinds of music associated with
science fiction and fantasy in the Twin Cities. I will list them in
chronological order:
1) Filk began as homebrew music associated with written-sf fandom.
(It dates at least to the 1940's.) There is a monthly filksing in the
Twin Cities. Info: bottorff@pconline.com or (612) 489-4966.
2) Mnstf Music is the kind of music which Fred Haskell used to play at
Mnstf meetings. Fred Levy Haskell seldom plays at Mnstf meetings, and
nobody else has been either; so a more rigorous definition of "Mnstf
music" and an analysis of which music played at Mnstf meetings did and
which did not meet that definition are of historical interest only.
However, the term may be in use for music played at other gatherings
and/or at conventions.
3) Music by rock bands with science-fictional names. I have no idea
whether this music has anything more to do with sf than Jethro Tull's
music has to do with agricultural improvement or The Grateful Dead's
music had to do with the folksong of that name.
