subject: Long Range Cellular Communications

I wonder if anyone out ther can answer this question.
What antenna and equipment "amplifier, etc" could be used to access cell sites
at extremely long range. By long range I mean about 100 miles away
or so. When I'm out to sea I would like to know how far I can feasably
access cellular networks on shore. Would a directional antenna work,I.E.
a multi element yagi or something and perhaps an amp??? How about height??
Is 100 to 120 miles just to far??
I welcome any feedback on this posting.
              Please help,
              Adam Perez
