>Does the face fit is my sole criteria.

One of the most bizarre things about fan fiction that I have seen is castin= g actors
to "play the roles" of the characters that are really the
products of the w= riter's imagination.
I never thought of doing this. When creating the "Athena"
characters, I si= mply sat down
with a piece of paper and a pencil and drew, saying "that is what the
chara= cter looks like."
I might be influenced by people I see in the real world, or memories of
the= m (Commander
Johnson is like this) or in one case, a photograph of some author I saw in
= the newspaper
(Matsubra was like this, and later, I learned this author was also named
Ma= tsubara).
In most cases (Bayanhong, Vorwoorts, Indesakar and all the alien characters=
) came
strictly from my own mind. I guess that's how I decided what the
character= s look like,
by how the pencil travelled.

I'm not knocking other people basing the appearance of their characters on = actors.
They probably do it for the reason that Michael does, for photo
manipulatio= ns.  On the
other hand, I don't think I would be satisfied in any picture I would find.=
  Ever since I have
been on-line, I've searched for a picture of a character who has appeared
i= n stories I
have written since 1984 (non-Trek), but in hundreds of pictures I have
look= ed at, I have not
come close to one that resembles her--yet I can draw her at will. I'm just=
 not up on actors.
Other than George Cloony and some other (Vivian Chow?), the names that are
= coming up
are completely unknown to me. People ask me about movies and describe who = is
playing in them and I draw a blank. The title of the movie comes second.
= I'm just not
clued in on actors. I don't think there's been a single movie or
televisio= n show I watched
because I liked the actor or avoided because I hated the actor.

It's just the way I am, but fascinating topic of conversation nevertheless.
