Gregg,
1. First you need to read the Install readme files on the Novell 5 CD1 and veiw
the online docs on CD3 from a workstation with Internet browser (Netscape or IE ver
3 or higher)
2. You need to use IPX and set the external net number to match your existing
3.xx network. Native IP is setup at the same time. Before you can log in to a
Native IP network you have to setup DHCP and DNS services for auto configuration of
the workstations. OR you can establish Static IP's on each Workstation during the
Client 32 installation from CD2.
3. I believe you should read all you can on the use of NETSYNC.NLM. This is
the NLM that allows you to create a super bindery that is managable via NDS. Once
you have the Bindery (s) inported into the NDS tree then all clients will have
access to the bindery resources based on the rights assigned via NDS.
4. As for the Volumes.. Here are my personal recommendations: (Traditional
for backwards compatability)
DOS Partition 250 - 500 Mb
SYS Volume 500 Mb - 1 Gb
*DATA/APPS Volume >1Gb or larger ( Naming conventions must be
adheared to to prevent duplicate names between the binderies. )
5. NSS volumes are limited in thier usage.
NO Mirroring, Duplexing, Excetera.... Don't opt for this type of
volume until the whole system is up and running with a complete backup solution in
place and verified. Then you can create a new NSS volume on a new drive and put in
the tree for use as a shared resource. This is definitely one of the last options
you should enable.
6. Novell press has a couple of books that will help you here. Installing
Novell 5, and Administering Novell 5 Networks.
7. Make sure you have at least 128 Mb of ram for the server. 256 Mb if you
are going to run all of the services at once from one box.
Good luck, It took me three trys before I read the directions and did it right!!!!
Novell 5 is rock solid and does more than 4 or 5 WinNT boxes without the
management hassel. I personally hate NT but it is job security because a lot of
people have bought it and can't keep it running !!!!!! Novell 5 is definitly the
best solution for your migration/upgrade. Keep up the good work.
