I think "niche" in this case means Linux has found its proper
place in the computer industry. After all, what is Google but a huge number
of interconnected Linux server machines and related disk storage farm?
Google's success has paved the way for other large-volume commercial sites
to run Linux servers on a huge scale.
I think of Linux right now as taking the place of what commercial UNIX
variants should have taken years go--mostly because of the generous
licensing model of Linux (e.g., extremely low).
