| subject: | Re: What`s `HST` mean? |
Once apon a time Paul Wankadia said, 'What's "HST" mean?' to Steven Anderson... PW> Well, not really. HST just gives one way full speed and the other way PW> slower rate -- it's not REALLY half-duplex, is it? SA> Well 14400/450 is close enough to half duplex for me :) SA> (Cant play DOOM, Quake etc :) PW> Got any idea of what sort of link is required for a good game of PW> Doom...??? You wouldn't be continually sending data ALL the time, would PW> you? Doom, Duke3d etc do send data in a continuous stream, but only in small bursts. You only need about 2400bps to keep up with the data rate, but at that speed the response time is too slow, so a realistic minimum is 9600. 14.4K is more or less perfect - same as a direct serial link. Same applies to Duke3D as well. Quake is an etirely different matter tho, and because of its server-client system even 28.8K is considered unsatisfactory by players used to playing on a network....in short Quake is a dead loss over a modem :( Regards, Simon ...
