Sable looks reddish in sunlight, but I don't notice any
"markings" in shading within her black fur.

Yupyup. Then there's Sable's "velcro kitty" mode, where she
suddenly decides that Mom's Lap is the Best Place to Be.  Always
when I've got crocheting or something there, of course. Or a book
(though books aren't as much fun; she can lay there and be petted
while I read).
