subject: CGI question

I am in charge of an organizations website. It's on a server that doesn't
provide a cgi-bin directory for its various sites. However I have seen a
message that told one of the other sites that cgi scripts could be put on his
site and run from there.
Couple of questions.
I want to get a mailmerge cgi and modify it to allow people to fill in a form
and add the output of the form to an html page.
1. If my modification to the mailmerge script doesn't work, will it "blow-up"
the server?
2. Can I put the script in a subdirectory off my site and have it run?
i.e website is in dir "mysite", can I put the mailmerge script in
"mysite\scripts" then have the html page appended in the "mysite" dir.
I can't use the dirname cgi-bin.
Thanks.
