subject: Re: History of the PC industry

From: "Geo."

What made windows a hit was the single driver model and app vendors like
Ventura and PageMaker supplying runtime windows so they could do WYSIWYG
page layout programs and have them work with lots of hardware. Nobody cared
about a GUI, they just got tired of hunting down a printer and video driver
for every app they used.

It was that single driver model that is Microsoft's largest contribution to
the computer industry because they were the first to really make it work
with apps on the PC. (note I said PC because the Mac also had it) Had it
not been for that, we would all be bitching about the Apple consent decree
and how Apple killed the PC..
