Actually the computer with the 16550 uarts is less than half a metre away from
my only phone socket and i was using a 25m extention lead to go to the 8250 
uart computer and I'm getting 3200cps on the 8250uart and shit all on the 
16550 ..even when i'm not multitasking . It could be that my $120 vesa i/o 
card with the 16550 uarts is a hunk of crap ...
