THE UNIVERSE: TREK is what is
commonly known as a fanzine, that is a
"fan-magazine". A fanzine is
small/amatuer press magazine that
generally publishes fan-fic or "fan
fiction". Fan-fic generally refers to
stories written about characters and
situations described in already existing
television programs and books. In the
case of THE UNIVERSE: TREK, we generally
focus on the world of Star Trek. Many
Star Trek based fanzines (Some of them
very good) focus exclusively on the
characters you see on the screen. Captain
Kirk, Picard, Sisko or Janeway. At THE
UNIVERSE: TREK, we focus on characters and
ships made up by the authors. This isn't
a hard and fast rule, if we get a good
story about Kirk and/or Picard etc, we'll
print it for you.
I will reprint from the editorial in
the first issue here:
This time I'm cutting right for the
basics.
1- This publication is designed to
open up the world of Star Trek. We watch
the adventures of Captains Kirk, Picard,
Sisko and Janeway, but we know there is a
whole universe behind them that we rarely
get to see. Through the stories published
in here, we will explore the ideas of Star
Trek a little further, in directions the
TV shows may not go.
Nothing in here is written in stone.
Everyone sees a slightly different Star
Trek. Everyone has a slightly different
Star Trek in their minds. By seeing what
the next author has to say on the subject,
I hope to widen my own personal Star Trek
Universe. I take what I like and
cheerfully leave the rest.
2- Any TV show or Media type is fair
game. Babylon-5, Space: Above and Beyond,
all the way to Buck Rodgers or Flash
Gordon. If you want to tell the story
then send it here. It doesn't even have
to feature people who dress funny and
pretend that they are on spaceships for us
to like it. We're pretty open minded...
3- I assume that Author knows what
he or she wants to say and has said it.
We check for spelling and grammar,
primarily. Any change no matter how small
is sent back to the author for approval
*AS TIME PERMITS*. Corrections and fixes
will be reflected in future issues.
        We claim publishing progress rather
than publishing perfection.
        4- Explicit and excessive portrayal
of violence and or sex will be sent to a
sister publication whose focus is closer
to those subjects. This publication aims
to be readable by brilliant yet precocious
children (Like mine) and their knife
wielding mothers. Authors should aim for
telling a good story not getting the chief
editor maimed.
5- The point we aim for is having
fun. If you, the reader have fun reading
the stories presented here in THE
UNIVERSE: TREK then we have attained our
goal.

We have copies of Issues #1 and #2
available. Issue #3 is in preproduction
now.
Paramount owns Star Trek and has
complete copyrights to everything in it.
It is therefore illegal to sell our own
Trek stories.
But there has been Star trek fan
fiction for thirty years. Why? Most
often because these were small operations
and after Star Trek was cancelled, no one
thought that Paramount was loosing any
money over small press Fanzines.
We try to stay small fry enough so
that it's not worth Paramount's time or
money to come and smear us. It's a sort
of underground thing.
Secondly, we do not do any of this
with the object of making money. We do
this because we enjoy the form of Star
Trek fan-fiction and we seek to preserve
and present to our friends with mutual
interests.
