I decided when Robert was two that I was pretty much going to let him go
his own route without too many warnings or interferences from me. I
decided that the day he climbed thirty five feet up into the tree in our
back yard. By his third birthday, he was riding a two wheeler with no
training wheels. By four, he was stunt riding. We have a picture of
him at about four and a half, riding a bicycle, and balancing
temporarily in a standing position on the handle bars. He would do all
those things anyway, even if I *didn't* let him. He'd just do them
behind my back. This way, we can talk safety. He knew before he was
three, for example, that you don't stand on any tree branch smaller than
your wrist, because it's not big enough to hold your weight. He knew he
could practice stunt riding in the parking lot of the nearby church
(though not when it was in use) and a couple of other reasonably safe
places; but he couldn't do it on the streets, where a car could hit him
if he made a mistake.
