There seems to be some minor controversy over which came first, FreeBSD or
NetBSD. According to the http://www.opensources.com website I cited
earlier, NetBSD was actually the original creation -- intended to continue
development of Bill Jolitz's 386/BSD distribution. NetBSD got sidetracked,
though, in the issue of portability. As a result of /that/, FreeBSD was
formed to redirect focus exclusively on the PC-architecture platform. As I
understand the situation, some people were upset at the deteriorating level
of support from the NetBSD group for the PC architecture (the original
platform for 386/BSD), so they created a new group to focus exclusively on
the 386 version.
