In this particular case, the "law" appears to vary depending on the make of competing modem, the danger it's seen to offer in the marketplace, and the inventiveness of the nobble writer on the day. The equivalent of B1 has been permitted to Netcrum for many years. (Since it's required to connect on some overseas calls, as is G1, this is a moderately useful advantage, no? Pity _we_ have to sponsor and bankroll this particular competitive advantage for the technically inept...)
