-=> Quoting Ed Nelson to Walter Luffman <=-
EN> You expressed some concern, Walter, about the Good Housekeeping seal
EN> of approval. And from my position of antiquity, you're wise to be
EN> concerned. Just thinking idly, have you ever seen an "approved"
EN> product that was _not_ advertised in GH?
Not once! Of course, I'm not a regular reader, but I spend the usual
amount of time in doctors' offices, so I read it now and then. (I've
got to remember to take a computer magazine next time....)
EN> What the Hearst Magazine Division is doing with _Popular Mechanics_
EN> was, IMO, foreshadowed by the GH Seal operation. The "quality" tools
EN> one finds on the rack at Walgreen's now carry the "Popular Mechanics"
EN> logo! Alas, how some of the old staffers must feel!
"Popular Mechanics" has become a brand-name for tools (I see them at
Wal-Mart), and I treat it as nothing more than a brand-name. If the
quality is consistently high over the long run, I may be influenced
by the logo. If not...well, I'll be influenced, but not favorably.
Personally, I like Stanley and Craftsman, because I've had good
experience with those two brands over a period of decades. (But I
avoid "Sears"-brand tools -- just because they're sold in the same
store, doesn't mean they're anywhere near the quality, or the lifetime
warranty, of Craftsman!)
