Yoo Hoo... Kevin!
KD> is what an animated feature is supposed to be. Of course I'm sure
omeone
KD> will find some reason that this movie is bad for kids, but I took my 4
KD> year old, and she loved it, so did I. Any other comments?
Here in Southern California, all the reviewers add the caveat that the movie
is too intense for young children ... And there are some parent groups that
have criticized Disney for making "Hunchback" so intense... BUT...
... I can't believe these people. If anyone is familiar with Victor Hugo's
classic tale, they know how intense the story is -- even someone with just a
vague knowledge of the story. In other words, to these people who are so
shocked, I say, "DUH!" ... Even Disneyfied, the film should be intense --
otherwise it would not be even a shadow of the original story.
Every story has its conflict and villians ... there is danger. Even in the
early films by Walt Disney, those elements were present -- lest we forget
the wicked queen/witch poisoning Snow White and later plunging to her death.
Characters die, are injured, abandoned, lost, and have bad things happen to
them -- just like in real life. If Disney shows that, where is the evil?
It isn't like Disney is going for shock value. It is all part of the story --
without the conflict or struggle, there is NO story...
So again, I say "DUH!" to those who are shocked "Hunchback" is so intense...
