 Hi Phil,
I'm not sure why I don't like Jazz. I played Jazz when I was in school, but
for some unknown reason, it just doesn't do anything for me. It just seems to
be a form of music that i can't relate to. I think that it's because it isn't
as well defined as rock music for instance.
I like alot of Rock bands that play in Odd timings, but for some reason, i
just am not into Jazz in general.
My younger brother is a Bass guitarist, and He's signed to Virgin Records.
He's what i would really call a "prodigy" or Virtuoso; i mean He is EXTREMELY
Talented. He bought an Upright, and taught Himself to Play that as well. If
it has Strings, He can play it.
He's into stuff like Miles Davis, and Ornette Coleman; and a Ton of 50's
Jazz stuff.
I do listen to some stuff like Mahavishnu Orchestra ( Cobham is an AWESOME
drummer), but to me I like VOCAL music-I think that's one reason that i am
not into Jazz. Jazz just seems"too free" for my taste.
One of my Favorite drummers, is Steve Smith, but i don't like The Jazz stuff
that He plays; I love the Rock Stuff that He has done, especially when He was
playing with Tony McAlpine-Awe inspiring Double bass work, I can even deal
with the Jean Luc Ponty stuff, But that's not "traditional" Jazz, either.
I can't really put my finger on WHY I am not into Jazz, but I have a few
ideas, The best that i can say is that I just can't relate to Jazz- it
doesn't move me Emotionally, or Spiritually; which is 2 of things that i
expect from Music.
It's just like Classical music- I like Wagner, but i don't like ALL
Classical Music. I can listen to Beethoven, but i am not really fond of His
writing, I would rather hear Bach.
