-> Sheila's going to kill me, but a kid is going to move the
-> turtle around and draw stuff, and it's going to be COOL..
-> for the first few times... And then...
SK>I'm going to kill you? For voicing your opinion? C'mon!
Just an expression.... ;-)
-> How can that compare with turning out something that flashes
-> colors, and animations, and sound, and you can watch video,
-> etc, etc... Or you turn out a newspaper that people read and
-> comment on.... I imagine THIS stuff gets old, too, but it
-> seems to beat heck out of a turtle! ;-)
SK>No, I realize that. Mostly, probably, because I've heard it from several
SK>sources by now, and I realize that things are a LOT different today from
SK>when I was first introduced to the turtle back in the late 70s/early
SK>80s. We didn't even have personal home computers back then, so the
SK>turtle was definitely cool.
I can relate... I still remember how "cool" it was to create
a Jack-O-Lantern on Halloween and a Christmas Tree (complete
with blinking lights) on Christmas for my son... At the time
this was hot stuff; nowadays.... ;-)
SK>I discussed with this UC Berkeley computer dept. member, whether or not
SK>I should mess with the turtle in the course I'm teaching this coming
SK>fall. He cautioned me that the kids wouldn't think that much of the
SK>graphics as compared to other types of computer graphics so common
SK>today, but still thinks there is value to it. I'm going to try it and
SK>see what happens. I think that some good programming methodology can be
SK>taught via the turtle.
SK>Possibly some of the students will think it's quite corny. We'll see.
Forwarned and all that.... Heck, try it out, and if it isn't
making it, have something waiting in the wings....
