ED> While I do have several high quality surge protectors on all my
ED> electronics, I could never justify the high cost of the UPS units.
They aren't that expensive these days, unless you need a really big
one. And if your existing surge protectors offer low-voltage
regulation (some of the better ones do), you can save even more.
A 400-450VA unit will do nicely for the average single-machine BBS
(or a well-equipped user's system), especially if you don't try to
power the monitor with it longer than it takes to exit and shutdown;
I've seen these priced as low as $150 via mail-order, and even at
some local discount chains.
ED> To protect my data, I save my work frequently, and backup to tape
I do the same...but I still want the security of a UPS, especially
now that I'm starting up my own BBS. Note: I don't have one either,
yet...but it's on my list for Real Soon Now, even though I'm in a
good-power area.
