I've only used it for filesystem copies... The other server was already mounted
as an SMB share, so I never had the need to use it in network mode.

--  I checked the manpage, and it says that you can set a
environment variable RSYNC_PASSWORD or use a --password-file option. the
--password-file is recommended on a multiuser system because environment
variables are visible to all users.
