1. run nlupdate, don't run nldiff. man nldiff contains:

You normally do not need to call nldiff manually, nldiff is designed to be
called automatically by nlupdate.

2. *Before* to write in an echo, do RTFM please: all options and the
examples of usage is documented in the manual (man pages in unix-like
distributions, html in the Windows, DOS, OS/2 distributions)
