BJ> I think eventually max needs to be able to take a hand-off from BJ> either mgetty or inetd. RJT> Not bink? Correct, not bink. Bink would also take a hand off from mgetty. Mgetty is an existing piece of Linux code for answering modems, and should be able to handle handing off to different programs for (a) Fax, (b) FTS based call (i.e. to Binkley), (c) PPP, (d) standard user (normally a shell login, but for us Maximus for the BBS), and possibly (e) voice modem (i.e. answering machine). RJT> I get more calls from other mailers here than anything RJT> else, these days. To also have the ability to deal RJT> with PPP would be nice. ... BJ> My goal would be to eventually have Fax, modem and Voice answering BJ> machine all handled via a single modem on a single serial port BJ> controlled by getty handing off to the appropriate software. I'd BJ> also like getty to handle caller ID and distictive ring BJ> information, and be able to act according to my wishes. RJT> This sounds good, except that I have no particular RJT> use for the distinctive ring feature or caller ID for RJT> that matter since the former isn't offered here and RJT> the latter is something they want me to pay them to RJT> refrain from stopping it getting here. (One of those RJT> weird, phone company things, like paying to not be RJT> listed. :-( ) I use distinctive ring to allow my BBS to answer one phone number and my voice calls to not be answered by the BBS and instead be answered by me, all on the same, single phone line. Allowing for supporting Caller ID and/or distinctive ring doesn't *require* the need for eitheer or both. If you wanted the computer to screen all calls (voice / data / fax) you wouldn't need the distictive ring that I'm using. Just use a modem capable of voice, data and fax. Let the computer "take a message" or allow touch tones from a voice caller to have the computer "ring" your phone for you to pick up.... I have a seperate box that uses caller ID that screens my voice calls. Depending on caller ID on my voice phone line, determines wether my phone actually rings and how many rings you get before my answering machine will pick up the call.... Take care.....
