Put a hardisk controller with an old BIOS into a 586 and the limitation is back
again. I had a Pentium based server with a rocketraid controller that can't
boot over 1024 cyls.

That may be valid for latest mainstream distributions.

You should really expand your horizon and check out

http://distrowatch.com/search.php

for i386 builds. (Adjust Architecture to i386)

There are 48 hits for Ubuntu based distros and 142 hits for any i386 operating
systems.

There are builds with 3.x kernels that are build for small sized hardware.

Normality within the linux world is what matches the users requirements.
