All,
There has been a lot of discussion in this forum about
interoperability between the various vendor's implementations of 56k
modems. I'm afraid that I haven't had the time to follow all of the
debate. I will, however, fill you in on what is happening on the
standards front.
Recognizing that ITU-T Recommendations can take a long time to
complete, and recognizing the urgency to complete a standard as quickly
as possible in order to minimize the impact of non-interoperable
proprietary solutions, TIA TR-30.1, at their last meeting, initiated a
project to complete a TIA Interim Standard. The goal is to complete
this work by the middle of 1997. To accelerate this effort, an ad hoc
group has been formed within TR-30.1. Between regular TR-30 meetings
and ad hoc sessions, we will likely be meeting about once a month until
this Interim Standard is completed.
In parallel with this effort, TR-30.1 will continue to support the
effort to complete an ITU-T Recommendation (in the new Study Group 16)
as quickly as possible. The goal is that the ITU-T Recommendation will
interoperate with the TIA Interim Standard. The ITU-T Recommendation
will likely be a superset of the TIA Interim Standard.
