Welcome, Stuart,
Ken's right, but there is a little more to it than that. For afirst time
project, you might want to consider something less challenging than a lens,
like a newtonian telescope mirror. Some good books about grinding glass
include:
"How to Mkae a Telescope" by Jean Texereau "Making Your Own
telescope" by Allyn Thompson "Procedures in Experimental
Physics", edited by John Strong
