Jonathan, I'd be happy to help you with your HP9000 scenario.

I spent most of 2000 working with two HP9000 systems.

They run HP-UX, an HP variant of Unix, that is pretty close to standard
Unix, except for those modifications designed to support the HP-unique
hardware in the HP9000.

A key question is: Which model(s) of HP9000 will you be supporting. They
come in all sizes, but aside from the hardware issues, the operating system
will be basically the same on all versions.

The best way to "service" the equipment is to pay for a service
contract with a company that specializes in maintaining HP9000 hardware.

If you have multiple HP9000 systems, you'll be busy enough just worrying
about the Operating System. Don't complicate your life by trying to get
involved in hardware as well.

As for documentation -- your best bet is the man pages on the system.
