perhaps his micrometer only goes to two decimal places instead of four or more?

i see the same thing being run into when folks are building their own
spherometers for use in telescope mirror making... they tend to grab a cheap
micrometer or two from harbour freight or some place similar and then find they
are limited to only two decimal places when they really need at least four...
