I don't use Linux, but I think Linux distro differences usually boil down to:
- Package management tools & philosophies
- Configuration file placement & philosophies
- Tools installed by default & minimum installation size
- Default X Windows window manager (KDE or Gnome) & configuration
- Version of GNU C/C++
- Emphasises placed on security vs ease-of-use
- Probably some other things I've forgotten
