I've just gotten throug the book "The Expedition of the Donner Party
and Its Tragic Fate" written by Eliza Donner who was one of the
surviving children.
 
Extremely interesting is how she describes life for herself and her other 3
sisters after the ordeal was over. She had 2 elder sisters.
 
One was 14 and one was 12.
 
The year was early 1847 and it was considered quite normal then for someone
to step forward and marry the orphaned girls in order to provide for them.
It was part of the social system and the "ways of the day".
 
Elitha Donner married at age 14 was pregnant within a month. Leanna Donner
married at age 12 or just 13 and was pregnant within a month or two as
well.
 
They delivered fine.
 
Amazing how the social view over years changed. Laying your hand on a
13/14-year old now earns the man "pedophile-status", back then he
was a saviour and lauded by all.
