On a normal Linux distribution, /usr/local/bin is created, but reserved for
stuff that you've compiled from source. Packages with user binaries get
installed into /usr/bin instead. So my /usr/local/bin directory tends to get a
mixture of shell scripts that I wrote and binaries from sooftware for which
there was no suitable .deb available.

Different in Linux base system binaries end up in /bin, binaries from packages
in /usr/sbin and non package binaries (i.e. compiled from source without a
package) in /usr/local/bin .

I haven't touched any of the *BSD OSs for many years. :)
