Actually... several authors are getting very very good at screwing up 
rates.
Things such as hard drive overwrites and ugly viruses deliberately placed in
the program come to mind.  With a simple disclaimer that even a lawyer 5
minutes off the bench can write, it's all legal too.
I do none of the above.  Then again, I don't care too much either.  If
someone's going to rip me off for the penny ante money that I'm getting, then
they've lost money by hacking it :-)
