It sure is possible--the Beagle Bros. Font Editor is an 8-bit app, and
eats GS fonts for breakfast!

I remember tackling GS font display many years ago, and after finding
documentation on the complex data format and writing about 15 pages of
code, I found that I was almost there.  The size and complexity of the
code deterred me from finishing, since the text display subroutine
would have dwarfed almost any application I would write!  ;-)
