-=> Quoting Danny Ceppa to Nancy Backus on 01-19-07 13:25 <=- DC>> Natural childbirth is still safer. Only if it is an elective C-section for convenience sake. The stats seem to tell a different story, but that is partly because C-sections done in emergencies are already a delivery at higher risk. Most of those children would have certainly died at birth without the intervention... NB>> I suspect that some of the mortality may be because they are trying to NB>> save younger fetuses that would otherwise have never made it. But I NB>> wouldn't be surprised to find that some of them could be from birthing NB>> too early, on ones that are done for convenience rather than need. DC> The main reason caesariens are up is for convenience of the mother. That's not really true. Mother's convenience is only one of the reasons. Doctor's convenience is another. Both of those are specious from my point of view. But there are valid reasons for it as well, such as knowing that the baby is too big to birth naturally safely due to known complications for the mother, or knowing that the baby is in a bad position and that there is little or no hope of moving into the proper position, and even more, having the baby go into distress during labor and delivery itself. The main reason caesarians are up is that there are more of the valid complications being caught in time to save the baby by doing the caesarian than there used to be. And that is probably raising the rate of successful natural deliveries as well. NB>> PS the tagline just reminded me... Did you get my reply netmail from NB>> FidoTel yet? It looks as though it might not have left the bbs. neb DC> You're netmail still hasn't made it here. Hmmm... I thought I did it right, not sure whether the problem is on my end or his, then... Anyway, the gist of it was that Frank S is still around, just seems to be posting less frequently, and in spurts... (more like us, and not his usual daily any more ) ttyl neb ...
