I bump into Terry trying to explain to Eric something about Re: Car Audio?
EF> First of all, do you know exactly how loud 130db are? It's a car damned.
TS> But some idiots LIKE hearing damage.
I think "idiots" is a bit harsh, let's say "fools"!

EF> Secondly: +-3dBs... You call this FLAT? 3dB is like twice as loud. Let's
 EF> try +-1dB please!
TS> Over any listening area you're suggesting a tolerance which is simply
Well, I though he was talking about components rather than room... but
still!
TS> not realistic. +/- 3 dB is pretty good for most sites, and

 TS> surfaces.
I would concur for arenas, stadium, homes,... but for anything that is
"controlled listening area" it is WAY to much. In a world that people
complain about .5dB, +/- 3dB is a immense fall-back.
You have to remember that in most case, the +/- range is determined by
how low and how high sound will be reproduced. That is to say that a
+/-3dB 20-20K will most probably be a 40-16K +/- 1dB. With theses kinds
of measurements, we confuse a CD (20-20K +/-1db) with a cassette (40-14K
+/-1db).
Theses two things DO NOT sound the same, but BOTH are 20-20K +/- 3dB!!!
EF> I think we are confusing quality sound for lack of hearing anything
 EF> else!
TS> Nah. That's after we make him a set of headphones from JBL 2445's,
TS> and sweep 1.5-5 kHz into them at 50 W each. Think he'll be able to
TS> hear himself say "louder than a jackhammer" afterwards?
Nope, but that would also be cruel. Reminds me that today I heard this
years first convertible car. I could hear him from about 200m away!
TS> After all, not all of us can strive for the 100 dB dynamic range by
TS> pushing our environmental noise floor below 20 dBspl.
Even moreso when a CD gives us only about 96dB and most people only use
about 60-70!

Would that be in Connecticut! Where?
        Eric,...
... "Transporter Chief, Beam another 18in of snow to Connecticut...!" ;)
