I don't know about it being quite 75%, but essentially I agree. And
there doesn't seem to be enough emphasis on how fingering (or left hand)
technique contributes to good tone.

I don't doubt it. A fellow I used to play with had a Squier which
he'd bought at a time when he couldn't afford a better instrument. Some
years later, his situation had changed and yet he was still playing it a
lot because he liked the feel and the sound.
